Bathing Suit season is approaching!
No matter what time of year it is, swimming suit season always going to come eventually! Get ready now!
First of all, I am CERTAINLY no expert. Check with your doctor
before starting any type of new regime. The following tips are things
that I have learned from nutritionists, research (I am SOOOO OCD about
that) and experience.
A few great websites to get healthy recipes and useful information:
A few great websites to get healthy recipes and useful information:
- www.robynprusky.com Note: If you are in the St. Louis area, I highly recommend her services. She's not obnoxious, puts things in perspective and explains why to follow what she is saying. There are also awesome recipes that are healthy and taste great. In addition to being a superb nutritionist, she is also a life coach for overall great physical and mental health.
- www.bariatricfoodie.blogspot.com Nik and Jen both have had weight loss surgery and are doing very well. They have recipes and tips posted on this site that anyone can use. No weird or scary ingredients, easy to follow recipes with pictures and pack a great flavor.
- www.obesityhelp.com This website has been extremely useful before and after my surgery. There are specific surgery forums as well as useful tips. Have a question? You will get answers from your peers experiencing the same things.
- Exercise.. duh. Doesn't have to be anything extravagant. Walking is the best thing ever. Plus its free, which I am alllll about. If the weather is bad, go to www.realage.com. Find a Leslie Sansone 'Walk Away the Pounds' video and do it in the comfort of your home. Plug in some 80's dance music and dance like no one is watching. Not only good for your body but fun way to work it. Start slowly and build yourself up. It becomes addictive! I see muscle aches the next day as an achievement. I worked it baby! I earned those aches... but stay consistent and they will eventually go away.
- Water.. another duh.. But here is a handy tip. If you are thirsty, like REALLY thirsty, ice water is best. For getting in your regularly needed eight-8oz's a day, room temperature water is key. Google it if you don't believe me!
- Food.. After the surgery, my food intake level was drastically reduced. It's amazing to see how much people pile up on their plates. Portion control is major. Eat the protein on your plate first.
- Avoid all processed foods. Your body can't break down stuff that isn't natural. Stay clear of anything with high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated anything, aspartame and white flour. Enriched whole wheat is bullshit. It must say whole wheat or whole grain.
- Become a label reader!! Once you start getting into label reading, it will amaze you at how much crap they put into food. Go to the grocery store on a non-shopping day. Preferably without the kids so you can concentrate. Look at the labels of things you would normally eat. Compare them with other items. Your better choices count! Fresh is best.
- Vitamins.. I may get slack about this one.. (Remember I love you Robyn!!!!) You should get your daily requirement from food. However, that's not always possible. There are a few things that I swear by.
- *A GOOD multi-vitamin. Something comparable to Centrum.
- *Vitamin D-3 and ONLY D3. Most people are deficient. Best to get labs from your doc and proceed from there.
- *Omega 3 Fish oils. I use Coromega in a squeeze packet. Highly effective for helping cholesterol. Also rid me of horrible eczema breakout. Check it out at www.coromega.com. Walgreens.com has a buy 1 get 1 free offer right now (4/12/11) Which is a fantabulous price. One packet a day will do ya, with no fishy taste or aftertaste. I get it in the orange flavor and its like a dreamsicle. Also comes in lemon/lime and chocolate orange.
- *Vitamin B-12. The sublingual kind that melts under your tongue. Dissolves quickly and usually cherry flavored. Helps with energy. You can't overdose on it, its like vitamin C. You pee out the excess.
- Thyroid.. For decades my docs always checked my thyroid levels. Until I asked for a Free DT3 and DT4, my under active thyroid went undiagnosed for years. A regular TSH doesn't always show if there is a problem. Google Hashimoto's hypothyroidism and see if any of the symptoms could be something you are experiencing.
- Make time for YOU. Read a book, walk, find a hobby, something that makes you happy. If you aren't happy, chances are no one around you will be either. Find the positive in ANY situation. It may be hard, but worth it.
- Be your own advocate. You know your body better than anyone else. If something isn't right, then speak up! Don't be shy! Better to waste someones time then have something go wrong.
- Find a good nutritionist. Don't rely on your doctor for nutritional advice. Most of them don't have a clue and just want to give you pills for your problems and then more pills to counteract the side effects. Find someone that you can talk to easily and relate with. It's like psychiatrists/psychologists, everything is subject to interpretation and if you don't find someone that you can understand and relate with, you will never get the proper assistance.
Medications to avoid after weight loss surgery
I went to the
Dermatologist the other day and he gave me a few medications to clear up
some issues. Due to feeling like crap yesterday and today, I haven't
gone to pick them up yet. So I worked on getting rid of some piles of
crap in the kitchen and came across a list of drugs that can damage my
smaller stomach pouch. GOOD THING! I found out two of the medications
prescribed by the Dermatologist are on this list. Called Walgreens and
told them to put the stuff back on the shelf.Just thought
that I would post the list of medications that can damage a Weight Loss
Surgery patients stomach pouch. Kind of makes you wonder if a
non-weight loss surgery patient should use them as well.

- Also, if you get medications or vitamins from different places, its good to check this out for yourself. Herbal supplements and vitamins can also cause serious reactions with medications.
Coconut oil...
Unrefined coconut oil is great to use, as always, in moderation. Did you know there are more uses for it other than cooking? Check out this link...
